All Hooks Football Play
Oct 04, 2023Every team needs an “All Hooks” play. You can run it out of almost any formation. Even with double tight ends, it just gets trickier. We always recommend using a single formation when possible.
If you spread the defense out with five wide receivers, they will be forced to scramble. They will shift safeties over, move their linebackers wide, and maybe even move the safeties or linebackers up to the line and have them play as cornerbacks in man-to-man coverage. Regardless, this play will work.
Your quarterback should already know where he is throwing the ball. You usually have one or two really good players that can catch. But the defense has no idea who those are. So, just line up in five wide and have the quarterback throw to his surest target. Usually, the receivers on the inside are easier to target in this play.
The defense will be forced to cover the entire field and may have to call a timeout.
This play is especially good if the cornerbacks and other defensive players are playing off the receivers. If the corners are 7 to 10 yards deep, throw some hook passes to pull them back in.
I have seen too many high school teams try to throw deep against defenses that are playing their corners 10 yards deep. Why? You are running your receivers toward coverage. Recognize the coverage and beat it. Have one of your assistant coaches watch for this.
