Know Your Offensive and Defensive Gaps
Apr 04, 2023The gaps from the defensive side are pictured below. The gap between the center and each guard is called the A gap. The gap between the guard and tackle is called the B gap. The gap between the tackle and tight end is called the C gap.
The gaps from the offensive side are numbered. Even numbers are gaps to the right, while gaps to the left are odd numbered.
These are important because many offenses will call their running plays by the runner and the gap. The quarterback is usually No 1. So, you could call a 16 Off Tackle. This means the quarterback gets the snap and runs to the No 6 hole between the tackle and tight end on the right.
The first running back is usually No 2. So, you could run a Fake 24 Counter 27 Sweep. The running back takes a step to the right to fake that he is running a dive through the 4 hole, then runs a very wide sweep to the left.
Attack Your Gaps Not Players
Teach your defensive linemen to attack gaps, not the player across from them. In our league, you must line up across from a player. Some leagues don’t require that. You can line up wherever you want, but attack the gaps, not the players. This is very important.
