Don't Option Dumb Coaches
Dec 01, 2024You do not need to "Option" dumb coaches. What does this really mean?
This is actually taken directly from our Tackle Football Book that you can grab on Amazon.
The Option Offense is used by offenses to always be right. The quarterback has two to four different "options" on each play and reads the defense to decide which option is the best option to take on each play.
By using an option style offense, the defense will always be wrong, no matter how they decide to defend each play. See some of our "Option" plays in the "plays" category to get a better idea of what we mean by option offense.
Normally, we would have you Wedge, Off Tackle, Reverse, and Sweep them into oblivion. If they don't adjust to stop these basic plays, just keep running them.
A smart defensive coordinator will adjust and try to stop these plays. He will send more players to a certain side or gap and change the assignments so that everyone is covered and everyone is accounted for on each play whether the quarterback keeps the ball or gets the ball to any of his various options.
A dumb defensive coordinator will not make any adjustments and keep playing the same generic zone defense.
You don't need to run an option offense against a dumb defensive coordinator that makes no adjustments. You can just Wedge, Off Tackle, Reverse, and Sweep them into oblivion. That's much easier and safer than having your quarterback go through reads and try to make decisions and sometimes risky pitches to pitchbacks.
So, when you are faced with a defensive coordinator that doesn't adjust to stop your Wedge, Off Tackle, Reverse, and Sweeps, then just keep running those all day. When they adjust to stop your plays, then you can "Option them" until they demonstrate that they know how to stop that.
If the defense adjusts, and they are stopping your plays, then switch to an Option Offense. We have several different Options you can run. Just search "option" in the search bar. Make sure your players are capable of running it though.
Pretty simple, right?
