Teach Your Defenders To Go For Interceptions

Teach your cornerbacks and safeties to always go for the interception! But isn’t going for an interception a gamble?

Everything is a gamble. Trying to tackle is a gamble. Batting it down is a gamble. Batting it down can result in pass interference plays. I would rather they go for the interception, because you cannot be called for a pass interference when trying to catch it. Waiting for them to catch it and then trying to make a tackle is a bigger gamble. Just go for the interception.

Teach your players to intercept with both hands. A free hand can interfere with the pass. Just go up and get it with two hands, you’ll never get called for pass interference.

We practice this and drill this in practice.

Also teach them that when they go up for the interception, they can use their body to knock down the receiver. We practice this as well. Go up, put your hands up, and run into the wide receiver and knock them down!
